The electricity sector in Georgia - Distribution

There are two main customer groups for distributed energy in Georgia. Five distribution companies and around 30 companies operate as direct customers with annual electricity consumption in excess of 30 m kWh.

The distribution companies distributed around 75% of total electricity in Georgia in 2006. Except for the Abkhazia Energy company, which is currently outside Tbilisi's control, all distribution companies have now been privatised: UEDC, Adjara and Kakheti Energy Company were sold to the Czech company, Pro Energo, in June 2007. Abkhazia Energy Company is nominally still state-owned, but is currently outside the control of the government in Tbilisi.

Company Owner % distributed electricity 2006
Telasi RAO UES (Russia) 33,6%
UEDC Pro Energo (Czech republic) 35,0%
Kakheti Pro Energo (Czech republic) 3,6%
Abkhasia Energy Company State owned 19,9%
Adjara Pro Energy 7,9%

Telasi, responsible for electricity distribution in Tbilisi, and UEDC, the main distributer outside Tbilisi, each have approximately 1/3 of the market. Around 20% of electricity goes to Abhazia, while Adjara and Kakheti distribution companies have much smaller shares.

In addition to the five distribution companies, there is a range of companies that are allowed to purchase electricity directly from the generation companies.
