Working in an industry where saving hydro means big bucks, I’ve come to realize the importance of regularly reviewing your hydro bills and at the same time how many of us don’t.

A small mistake for a residential customer paying only a couple hundred dollars a month doesn’t add up to much and probably isn’t worth the effort to fix. However, as a small or medium business owner these same mistakes can cost thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars or more.

Monitoring your utility bills should be done on a yearly basis and possibly more. If reviewing your hydro bills seems like just another one of the million or so things you’re required to squeeze into a year that’s becoming increasingly shorter, consider outside consulting. Consulting firms and power quality companies will often provide billing analysis services for a relatively low cost, if not for free.

Consulting firms and power quality companies can offer significant advantages in dealing with your local utility and their sometimes convoluted billing structure. A thorough billing analysis can provide you with valuable information about how efficiently you’re using your energy and it can identify any errors in billing that are unidentifiable to the average business owner or accountant. A billing analysis is also a great way to get recommendations about products and services that can help you to lower your energy demand and monthly bills.

If you’re the adventurous type and you’re interested in doing a billing analysis on your own, keep you’re eyes open as I’ll be posting something in another week or so!
